The Barry Ashton Memorial Trophy

Single Stableford off 7/8 society handicap plus Yellow Ball team game

Friday 8th July 2005.

The 83rd meeting of TIGS, and the fourth of our 17th season, was held at Notts Golf Club on Friday 8th July. 26 members and 8 guests enjoyed warm sunshine all afternoon with not even a hint of rain. Playing conditions were perfect.

Four days prior to our visit, the course at Hollinwell had been used as a regional qualifying venue for this year’s British Open championship. The course was in “fabulous” condition, especially the slick and true greens. This really was a great golf course in great condition. It was worthy of note that when the Captain said that the course was superb, his comment was followed by a round of applause just to enforce the feeling of those present.

This meant, of course, that scores were generally low. Nevertheless, success came to our winner Ken Smith scoring 32 points to win THE BARRIE ASHTON MEMORIAL TROPHY. It is Ken’s first victory as a TIGS member and he offered his thanks for the day, especially to his playing partners.

2nd place was taken by Ron Austin with 31 points and a better back 3 than Geoff Snape who came 3rd. We had three players tied on 30 points, Gary Hardy coming 4th with a better back 9 than 5th placed Paul Turner who had a better back 6 than Mike Linwood.

Ken has his handicap reduced from 24 to 20. Ron’s handicap is reduced from 9 to 8.

Winning visitor was Alan Pullen’s guest Ray Moogan with 31 points and a better back 6 than Paul Turner’s guest Tony Sitek who came 2nd. Ray’s handicap is reduced from 18 to 15, Tony’s from 13 to 11.

The yellow ball prize went to Messrs Snape, Hughes, Edwards and Tresidder with 30 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Mike Linwood (5th hole) and Paul Turner (9th hole). The longest drive competition was won by Brian Hughes on the 18th hole.

Alan Pullen was also presented with a deserved prize for his performance at the previous meeting at Rye Hill. Due to a reading error by the Secretary, his score had been incorrectly positioned. “Sorry Alan!”.

The Captain explained to those that were unaware, that Michael Heath had recently been involved in a serious car accident but that he was now out of hospital and recovering at home. Best wishes are conveyed to Michael from everyone.

The next TIGS event is at Sand Moor Golf Club ( Leeds ) on Friday 26th August. Put it in your diaries NOW!
