The Barry Ashton Memorial Trophy |
|
Single Stableford off 7/8 society handicap plus Yellow Ball team game |
The 90th meeting of TIGS, and the fourth of our 18th season, was held at Ellesborough Golf Club, Aylesbury on Wednesday 5th July 2006. Following a long and dry spell of weather, with temperatures soaring into the 30s, we were unfortunate that the weather broke today. However, it could have been worse. Most of the South East had been smothered with rainstorms, but we were lucky to suffer only a couple of heavy cloudbursts. It was still hot and humid nevertheless.
25 members and 1 guest competed for The Barrie Ashton Memorial Trophy. The course was another good example of a society venue. It was rather hilly, which made walking slightly difficult in the humid conditions. The greens were reasonably fast, as they should be at this time of year. The clubhouse at Ellesborough has been refurbished recently, in anticipation of their Centenary celebrations, and the staff were very welcoming. The players enjoyed a three course carvery dinner before the prizegiving.
The winner with 36 points was a previous Captain, Mick Boulton. Nick McDonald was second with 35 points. Third with 34 points was Alan Overton. Fourth was John MacLaughlin with 33 points, who had a better back nine than our fifth placed Captain, Gary Hardy. Sixth was Chris Williams on 32 points.
Mick has his handicap reduced from 20 to 16. Nick’s handicap is reduced from 12 to 10.
Winning visitor was Paul Freeth-Selway’s guest, Dave Jones, with 35 points. Dave was our only guest of the day, but nevertheless it was a score to justify a win. Dave’s handicap is reduced from 20 to 16.
The yellow ball prize went to Messrs Boulton, Tinling and Holcroft with 36 points.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Geoff Snape (8th hole) and Garry Moffat (16th hole).
The longest drive competition was won by John MacLaughlin.
After the dinner, we raised our glasses in memory of our late member Barrie Ashton.
