The Barry Ashton Memorial Trophy

Single Stableford off 7/8 society handicap plus Yellow Ball team game

The 97th meeting of TIGS, and the fourth of our 19th season, was held at Garforth Golf Club, Leeds on Wednesday 4th July 2007. Garforth is a perfect TIGS venue. It is close to the motorway network, with an interesting golf course. There are a variety of holes – some short, some long, some dog-leg left, some dog-leg right, and with some water hazards thrown in for good measure. This was an exceptionally good value-for-money day out. The course had been several feet under water only 10 days beforehand, but you would never have guessed it. The greens were difficult to read – a criticism of your Secretary’s eye, rather than the greenkeeper’s ability!

17 members and 5 guests competed for The Barrie Ashton Memorial Trophy. Bearing in mind the drenching which most of the country appears to be suffering this Summer, we were exceptionally lucky to only have a couple of 10 minute showers, and these did not prevent John Brown winning with 36 points.

In 2nd place with 35 points was Dave Nelson. Your Captain, Gary Hardy, was 3rd with 34 points. Gary had a better back-nine than Darren Emmerson who came 4th. Steve Haigh was 5th with 33 points.

John has his handicap reduced from 23 to 19. Dave’s handicap is reduced from 12 to 10.

Winning visitor was Steve Haigh’s guest, Dave Rowe, with 28 points. Dave had a better back-nine than second-placed visitor Lee Grant (Darren Emmerson’s guest). Dave has his TIGS handicap reduced from 21 to 17. Lee is cut from 2 to 1!

The yellow ball team prize was won by Messrs Snape, Harris and Cumine with 28 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Chris Harris (7th hole) and Tony Rogers (12th hole).

The longest drive competition was won by Darren Emmerson (18th hole).

The next regular TIGS meeting will be held at Beau Desert Golf Club, Staffordshire on Wednesday 15th August 2007.
