The Barrie Ashton Memorial Trophy

The 111th meeting of TIGS, and the 4th of the season, was held at Aspley Guise Golf Club on Wednesday 15th July 2009. Again as we have become accustom the weather was dry and sunny with a few patchy showers with quite a strong breeze sometimes helping but often not.

TIGS last visited Aspley Guise in 1993 and we weren’t disappointed this visit. The course played quite tough not particularly long, but with narrow driving areas, undulating greens that were quite fast.

21 members and 5 guests competed for The Barrie Ashton Memorial Trophy, the winner with a good score of 35 points was Gary Hardy (same OLD faces!). 2nd with a score of 32 points was Mike Linwood, 3rd placed Peter Austin with 30 points and 4th was Michael Heath on 29 points.

Gary will have his handicap reduced from 4 to 2, while Mike’s handicap is down from 10 to 9.

The winning visitor was Bob Keefe`s guest Derek Pettigrew with 30 points. 2nd with 29 points was Ron Austin’s Guest Colin Hall. Derek`s handicap will be down from 7 to 5 and Colin’s will be reduced from 8 to 7.

The winning better ball team prize went to Messer’s Keefe, Cheeseman, Pettigrew and Painter with 91 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Gary Hardy on the 4th hole and Geoff Snape on the 10th hole.

Nearest the pin in 2 also was won by Bob Keefe on the 16th hole.

John Brown gave a tribute speech for Barrie and we all raised a glass in his memory.

Our next meeting is The Folex International Trophy at Coxmoor Golf Club Nott’s on Friday 18th September 2009 were we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of TIGS.
