The Harvey Chew Trophy
Wednesday 6th August 2008
Little Aston Golf Club
15 Invited members took part in the Harvey Chew Trophy. The Trophy is played between Committee, Past Captains & Previous Year’s Winners.
Unfortunately some of those members fitting the criteria were unable to play. They missed a wonderful Golf Course on a dry and bright day.
The course was all set up for the R&A Open Boys Championship, previous entrants have included the likes of Sergio Garcia, Padraig
Harrington to name but a few.
TIGS had there own Sergio but this one was from Garforth and not Castellon. SIMON LEARY destroyed the field with a winning score of 43
stableford points, his drives were straight, he hit the greens in regulation (a couple of exceptions because he chipped in twice) and sunk
the putts. He had at least 5 birdies including 2 twos! It was a pleasure to play alongside him.
Another fine performance came from past Captain PETER COWLE who scored a miserable 36 points! On any other day that would have won, the
average score was 29 points so that gives an indication as to the toughness of the course, or could it be the quality of the Golf! Little
Aston was fair, the greens true and with a good pace, the rough was tough as you would expect from a Championship course but the Secretary
mastered everything on the day.
The day finished with an excellent meal and our Captain Tony Rogers asked those present to remember Harvey and a glass was raised to his memory.
Harvey would have enjoyed the course and he would have appreciated too the fine golf played by Simon, incidentally this score was a record
for the Harvey Chew Trophy.
This report has been prepared by one of Simon’s playing partners, he could not on this occasion write the report after such a winning total.
