The H&R Johnson Trophy

March 2005.

The 80th meeting of TIGS, and the first of our 17th season, was held at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club on Friday 18th March. The weather conditions were extremely kind to us, especially for a links course at this time of year; a stark contrast to this time last year when we were buffeted by 50mph winds at Royal Liverpool. A cool breeze and overcast skies cleared the way at noon to make way for a little sunshine for the players to enjoy – just as arranged by the Secretary!

We had 28 members and 9 guests in attendance.

The course, host to the Ryder Cup in 1933, was in good condition, the greens especially so. It presented a stern challenge to all the players; however this did not stop George Hogan winning the H&R JOHNSON TROPHY with an excellent 37 points.

Second came past-Captain, Mick Boulton, with 36 points. Third was Simon Leary on 35 points, having a better back nine than fourth-placed Peter Cowle. Michael Heath came 5th with 34 points.

George became our 46th different winner in 80 events, and has his handicap reduced from  7 to 5. Mick Boulton’s handicap is reduced from 23 to 20.

Winning visitor was Stephen Haigh’s guest Brian Rowe with 34 points beating Ian Roberts’ guest, Brian Flower, by virtue of a better back-nine. Mr Rowe’s handicap is reduced from 21 to 17, Mr Flower’s from 24 to 21.

The yellow ball prize went to Mike Linwood, Simon Leary, Mick Boulton and Peter Austin with 38 points.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Gary Moffat (1st hole) and Michael Heath (10th hole). The longest drive competition was won by Mike Linwood on the 17th hole.

After the prizes had been awarded, the Captain presented Michael Heath with a gift from the Society by way of thanks for the splendid work he carried out as Secretary of TIGS for 16 years.

The next TIGS meeting is on Friday 15th April at John O’Gaunt Golf Club, Bedforshire.
