The 87th meeting of TIGS, and the first of our 18th season, was held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Friday 17th March 2006. It was a dry day, but with temperatures barely above freezing and a piercing, icy wind it was surely the coldest TIGS day we have had. I cannot recall playing a TIGS event with some snow still laying on the ground.

28 members and 12 guests had chosen to play Royal Liverpool, venue for The Open later this year. Many of the bunkers were classed as Ground Under Repair with dropping zones in place; we were also forced to play most of our fairway shots off portable astro turf mats. Such measures are obviously there to prepare the course for its famous guests who are coming in July, but nevertheless, it was disappointing to play the course under such restrictions.

The winner of The H&R Johnson Trophy with 38 points was John MacLaughlin. Mike Dobson was second with 37 points, one point ahead of third placed Dave Nelson. In fourth place was Mike Linwood with 32 points. Fifth place was taken by Stephen Haigh with 31 points.

John has his handicap reduced from 14 to 11. Mike Dobson’s handicap is reduced from 15 to 13.

Winning visitor was Simon Woodbridge’s guest (and former member) Ken Page with a tremendous 39 points. Ashley Heath’s guest, Peter Baumgartner, came 2nd with 32 points. Ken’s handicap is reduced from 10 to 8, Peter’s from 18 to 16.

The yellow ball prize went to Messrs MacLaughlin, Pullen, Brown and Dobson with 38 points.
