The Staloton Trophy

15th October 2004.

The 79th meeting of TIGS was held at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds on Friday October 15th 2004. 28 members and 12 guests attended. The weather forecast had not been very promising but most of us managed 9 holes in the dry before showers came to add another hazard to overcome. The greens had recently been hollow-tined and were disappointing for such a prestigious course. The club agreed to reduce the green fee because of this and financial credit to members is being arranged.

Despite this most members seemed to have enjoyed the day, none more so than Stephen Haigh who won the Staloton Trophy with a score of 35pts. Stephen is our 45th different winner since we started competing in 1989. Second with 34pts was Garry Moffatt. Third came Simon Leary with 32pts, fourth Mick Boulton with 31pts beating Paul Edwards with a better back nine. For the first time in TIGS history the committee decided to give a 2 point penalty for slow play to a four ball comprising Michael Heath (dropping him from 4th to 8th and out of the prizes), Ian Tinling, Greg Hammond and his guest (and former member) Mike Barrett. As was stated on the start sheet – “your group should keep up with the group in front NOT just ahead of the group behind”.

Stephen’s handicap is reduced from 24 to 20 and Garry’s from 5 to 4 –Such reductions to be operative for the subsequent three meetings attended.

Winning visitor was Adrian Hinchliffe’s guest Eddie Wynn with 36 pts beating Jamie Potts’s guest Robert Hinchliffe with a better back nine. Eddie’s handicap is reduced from 5 to 3 and Robert’s from 22 to 19.

The best yellow ball team score was recorded by Geoff Snape, Garry Moffat and new member Darren Emmerson with 38pts.

Nearest the pin on the 10th was won by Phil Bower’s guest John Kendal and on the 17th by Paul Edwards. Longest drive on the 18th was won by Gary Hardy.

Most wayward drive was awarded to Phil Bowers who managed to arrive at Moortown, Lincolnshire before realising his error!

The Royal Mosa Trophy was awarded to Michael Heath for winning the ko competition (Adrian Hinchliffe and Paul Cowlishaw failing to complete their semi-final in accordance with the rules and were both disqualified). The Flor Gres Trophy was presented to John MacLaughlin for the best aggregate (best of 3) over the sea son. John scored 109 pts, beating Chris Harris and Garry Moffat who both had 107 pts. Michael’s handicap is reduced from 7 to 5 and John’s from 8 to 6.

The AGM followed the prize presentations.
