The Staloton Trophy

The 101st meeting of TIGS, and the eighth and last of our 19th season, was held at Wellingborough Golf Club (Northants) on Thursday 25th October 2007. It was a pleasant Autumn day – cool, but with hardly any wind, and cloudy skies. Temperatures felt around 14/15 degrees. Most importantly (as always with TIGS events) it stayed dry.

TIGS visited Wellingborough in 2003, and I had forgotten how lovely this golf club is. The clubhouse is a beautiful, huge mansion house (Wellingborough Hall) with grand fireplaces and high ceilings. The golf course has a nice variety of holes and is slightly undulating. The course was in excellent condition, the greens especially so. I can hardly recall playing on better greens at this time of year. There was a lot of course maintenance being conducted as we played, and I interpreted this as a positive sign that the Club are active in keeping the course in tip-top condition.

25 members and 9 guests compete for The Staloton Trophy. The winner with 39 points, four points clear of the field, was Alan Overton.

In 2nd place with 35 points was Michael Heath. Michael had a better back-six than 3rd placed Mike Linwood, who had a better back-nine than Dave Nelson who was 4th. Peter Austin came 5th with 34 points (and a better back-nine than Nick McDonald).

Alan has his handicap reduced from 23 to 19. Michael’s handicap is reduced from 8 to 7.

Winning visitor was George Hogan’s guest, Ian Pope, with 32 points. Ian has his handicap reduced from 20 to 16. Tony Rogers’ guest, David Sprot, came 2nd with 29 points (BB9). David has his handicap adjusted from 27 to 24.

The yellow ball team prize was won by Messrs Cumine, Burrows, Harris amd Linwood.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Heath (4th hole) and Nick McDonald (11th hole).

The longest drive was won by Dave Nelson’s guest, Mark Louch (17th hole).

The Flor Gres Trophy (aggregate of best 3 rounds in the season) was awarded to Mike Linwood (110 points – 37,38,35)

Gary Hardy was presented with the Royal Mosa K.O. trophy for winning the Annual Matchplay Competition.

The AGM followed the prize presentations.
